How to adjust the Pocket for various firearms
Besides the external "breakaway" feature, the Breakaways pocket is deeper and wider than pockets found in normal pants. The pocket is also adjustable.
When comparing the CCW Breakaways pocket
with
a traditional pant pocket, you can easily see the differences. The widths of traditional pockets end at the center line of the thigh, while the
CCW Breakaways pocket extends further toward the
inner-thigh
region. The CCW Breakaways pocket is also shaped like a holster
which aids in positioning
a firearm ergonomically and enables a quick, effortless withdrawal.
To adjust for the correct pocket depth, turn the pant inside-out. Place your firearm on the exposed pocket (as illustrated) while allowing approximately 1" of space between the bottom seam (middle red pencil pointer) and the hand grip (top red pencil pointer). When carrying the firearm in your pocket, this will provide enough room between the pocket seam and the hand grip so that you can easily establish a "full gun grip" while your hand is in your pocket.
Step 2 (adjusting the pocket)
With your gun still lying against the pocket, fold over the velcro meshing of the pocket so that it lines up with the end of your gun barrel. This "fold-over" provides the base by which your firearm will rest (bottom red pencil pointer). See the illustration below depicting various fold-over locations for various handguns. Also notice that the leading edges of the hand grips for each are in the same location.
Even though the barrel lengths change among various handguns, the reference point for correct sizing is the leading edge of the handgrip, not the end of the barrel. Adjusting the firearm's pocket depth should compliment the proper handgrip location. This adjustability makes the CCW Breakaways pocket a one-size-fits all solution.
Try the pants on and examine for concealment and comfort. The firearm should fit comfortably within the inner-thigh region of your body. You should also have your normal range of motion, and the gun should hinge along the hip joint line of flexure. Test your ability to sit, squat, and move. Test the withdrawal. Move the position of the velcro base either up or down to adjust for your specific firearm and your specific body shape.
With some guns and some body shapes, the wearer may need to laterally adjust the muzzle location. Lateral adjustments are easily made using the horizontal velcro strap to pull the pocket laterally until you find the muzzle location ideal location that works best for you.
How to store and carry a firearm in the Pocket
Holstering the firearm into your front pocket is quick and easy. You can begin with the pocket already broken open or closed. If closed, slide the firearm in through the pocket opening and allow the muzzle to rest on the bottom of the folded-over pocket. If the pocket is already opened (un-snapped), simply slide the firearm in through the pocket opening and allow the muzzle to find the bottom resting point of the folded-over pocket. Then, lift up the waist band and reattach the hidden "breakaway" snaps underneath. Reposition the waistband and you're ready.
Because both pockets are constructed similarly, the above procedure applies for both right-handed and left-handed users. .
How to quickly withdraw a firearm from the Pocket
Reach into your pocket and get a firm hold of the firearm's hand grip . . . sliding your trigger-finger past the trigger assembly.
Snap your wrist away from your body . . . opening the enlarged "Breakaways" pocket.
Pull straight up.
Practice the withdrawal motion slowly without looking down at the pocket. Keep your eyes on the target. Your speed will improve with practice.
Withdrawal will be ergonomic. The firearm, your hand, your wrist, and your arm will be in ideal locations and in the proper orientation to make the withdrawal very fast. There will be no awkward contortions required as is the case with other concealed carry methods.
Additional advantages to the CCW Breakaways pant
include:
- You are not required to take your eyes off your target while reaching for your firearm.
- You only have to use one hand, not two, to perform the firearm withdrawal. This is especially valuable in close-quarters scenarios where your other hand & arm can be used as an additional defense tool.
- If a conflict scenario is escalating, and you haven't fully committed to withdrawing your firearm, you can covertly establish a "ready" position until you're absolutely sure that withdrawing your firearm is the proper course of action. In a situation where milliseconds count, this "ready" position can save your life and get you on target faster.
MagSocks are primarily designed for carrying
spare magazines, but they are also ideal for concealing and securing
edged weapons, pepper sprays or other devices that you desire having
quick access to.
Both pockets in the CCW Breakaways pant are fitted to carry MagSocks. Within each pocket there are two velcro'd locations where MagSocks can attach; thus allowing for right-handed or left handed use. Only the pocket without a gun in it can be used for MagSocks. If you're right-handed, place the MagSocks into your left front pocket while your firearm is in your right front pocket. Conversely, if you are left-handed, place the MagSocks in the right front pocket while your firearm is in your left front pocket.
MagSocks conveniently allow you to carry additional, concealed magazines. The locations of the spare magazines are specific and known . . . making it ideal for fast reloads.
To retrieve the magazines, simply reach into the pocket where you have them located and pull out the magazine by its base cap. The MagSock will remain attached to the inside of the pocket. You may, or may not, have to use the pocket's breakaway feature-- either way will work.
Just like with firearm withdrawal, magazine withdrawal via use of MagSocks is quick and easy. The ergonomics allow for a natural alignment of your fingers, hand, wrist, and arm. You should practice reloading scenarios because fine motor skills degrade under stress. CCW Breakaways has taken these factors into consideration in the design of this overall system, and you should find that the MagSocks compliment this principle.
How to quickly deploy spare magazines from the cargo pockets
The CCW Breakaways cargo pants are different than traditional cargos. First, the depth of our pockets are deeper so that the wearer can store and carry up to four AR magazines or four Glock 33 rounds magazines-- two on each side. Other manufacturers do not design their products to conceal the longer Glock mags . . . so we did!
Second, there are internal pockets within the cargo pockets. These internal pockets provide a specific location for oversized magazines; thus aiding in faster deployment.
Third, the leading edges of our cargos have a non-catch feature which prevents accidental opening of the pocket. The trailing edges have billows for expansion allowing ease of access. This streamlining of the pocket opening protects the contents from falling out while allowing quick and efficient access.
Fourth, our cargo opening is designed for opening under intense circumstances . . . when fine motor skills degrade and gross motor skills prevail. There is only one small Velcro strip positioned close to the trailing edge. Simply shape your four fingers into a cup-like fashion and find the underside of the pocket cover. Then slide the hand to the rear and "breakaway" the opening. You can now quickly and easily deploy the extended magazines and reload. For more on this subject please watch the scenario video on our website titled Backup Magazines Exchanged Quickly to examine the effectiveness of this design feature.
And finally, our cargo pockets
have
a little dressier styling. They don't have the classic BDU or TDU look.
We maintained
our theme . . . tactical proficiency in normal-looking business and
casual clothing.
How to use the Pocket in Multi-mode
Multi-mode allows you to use the CCW Breakaway pocket as a normal pocket while at the same time utilizing the folded section as a secret compartment for important documents, sums of money, or flash drives containing sensitive information.
Simply fold over the velcro hooked tab to match with the upper most loop tab. This provides for a normal depth pocket where you can keep your keys or spare change. If using the secret compartment section, you should place your valuables inside before folding over the pocket.
How to install the optional TGS
The CCW Breakaways Trigger Guard Shield is an optional item for handguns that do not incorporate a mechanical safety such as Glocks. The TGS prevents accidental intrusion into the trigger area.
Insertion of the TGS is done by turning the pant inside-out and locating the built-in sleeve. Slide the TGS into the sleeve.
In figure 1 below, a Glock 19 is superimposed over the TGS to illustrate the approximate location and coverage of the shield when installed. Figures 2 and 3 illustrate the insertion of the TGS into the built-in sleeve.
